Jacob J. Karl Memorial Staff Scholarship

The Jacob J. Karl Memorial Staff Scholarship is awarded annually to a staff member in memory of the county legislator who served on The ReHab Center's Board of Governors and was instrumental in promoting the agency's growth during the 1970s. In order to qualify, staff members must have a minimum of two years of full-time employment status and have a specific purpose for the scholarship, which will enrich the employee personally and help in the performance of his or her job. Therefore, eligible staff may apply if they are planning to educate or advance themselves by taking a course, participating in a seminar, attending a conference, etc. If taking a college course, the staff member need not be pursuing a degree; just a course to enrich one's self would suffice. The scholarship committee chooses this recipient, and the award amount - which could range up to $500 - is based on the information submitted.

$1,500 ReHabilitation Center Scholarship

The ReHabilitation Center's $1,500 Scholarship is awarded annually to a college student from Cattaraugus County. In addition to the cash award, the recipient is given the opportunity for paid summer employment at the agency, allowing him or her to work with people with disabilities and gain valuable work experience in his or her chosen career.

To qualify for this scholarship, the student must be a college junior, senior or graduate student majoring in special education, social sciences or a health-related field. Any resident of Cattaraugus County meeting these criteria may apply. A scholarship committee comprised of board members and community members will choose the winner according to need and use of the scholarship. Also, this committee may make a special exception for children of staff who do not live in Cattaraugus County so that they may be eligible for this scholarship.

Charlotte Frost Memorial Nursing Award

This $750 cash award will be given to professionals already in the nursing field as a way to acknowledge excellence, or as a scholarship to enhance educational opportunities for nursing professionals, particularly those who work with people who have developmental disabilities.

Charlotte, or "Char" as her family and friends knew her, was the parent of a child with a disability and one of The ReHab Center's founding members. She worked tirelessly for people with disabilities right up until her death in August 1993. Her strength, caring, talent, energy, commitment, generosity and advocacy live on. She continues to be an inspiration to The ReHabilitation Center and the community.
